Eastern Rodopi
The Eastern Rodopi are spread over a territory of about 34% of the mountains' total area, constituing a much lower part with very different landscape, vegetation and wildlife.
The large reservoirs Kardzhali, Studen Kladenets, Ivaylovgrad and Borovitsa and are located in this part of the mountains. The region is rich in thermal mineral springs. The waters around Dzhebel have national reputation for healing various diseases. Belite Brezi is an important healing centre for respiratory and other ailments.
View from the Southern Rhodopes Major cities in the area are Haskovo and Kardzhali, as well as the smaller Momchilgrad, Krumovgrad, Ivaylovgrad, Zlatograd and Kirkovo. The Eastern Rhodopes are one of the richest from the point of view of biological diversity areas in Bulgaria. This is the best example of how the traditional extensive agriculture may coexist and even benefit the wildlife. The mountain is a real birdwatching paradise and one of the priority areas for conservation activities of the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds/BirdLife Bulgaria (BSPB). The BSPB Vulture Centre in Madjarovo is the focal point for generating nature conservation activities in the region.
