Durankulak Lake complex

Durankulak Lake complex is situated in NE Bulgaria, 7km from the border with Romania and laying on the Black Sea coast. It is a RAMSAR Site, IBA and qualifies for SPA and Natura 2000. Threatned by resourt and golf course developments this magnificent wetland shlters up to 80% of the global population of the Red-breasted Goose. The BSPB/BirdLife Bulgaria has longterm monitoring activities in the area (www.bspb.org) and reently has started twining activities with the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust (www.wwwt.org) in conservation of the area envisaging the establishement of a field station. The wetland is the most important breeding site of the Ferruginous Duck Aythya nyroca along the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, it is also a strategic stop over site for wetland birds migration from Easternmost Europe to the south and it the first stop over site for the migrating colonial birds from the Danube Delta.
