Kresna Gorge

The Kresna Gorge is a spectacular steep valley in South-Western Bulgaria. It was formed by Struma River, which stems from Vitosha Mountains and flows into the Aegean Sea. The gorge is extremmely rich in biodiversity, mainly of Mediterrannean type birds, reptiles, insects and vegetation. This is one of the most important parts of the migratory flyway, called Via Aristotelis. As an area of European importance for birds it is identified by the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds/BirdLife Bulgaria (BSPB) as a NATURA 2000 site. The unique biodiversity is endangered by a construction project of the Struma Motorway, which is a part of Trans-European Corridor No. 4. The joint efforts of the main Bulgarian Nature Conservation organisations - BSPB, Balkani Wildlife Society, Green Balkans, Za Zemyata and others stopped the project and an alternative variant was developed by experts, hired by the above mentioned NGOs.
